The movie uncovered the remarkable adventure of five young fishermen who set off from Taiwan in 1955 intending to cross the Pacific in an old Junk. Their plan being to sail to San Franciso, hauling the boat across the US to take part in a trans-Atlantic yacht race - none of them having had any experience of junks or the open sea!! The sixth junk-mate, the young American Vice-Consul in Taipei, filmed the journey.

Robin's earlier film about Loo-Chi, "HULOO", premiered at the NZ International Film Festival 2008.

During September of 2010 Bharat visited Christchurch filming Loo-Chi, his daughter Lih-Lan, and two grandchildren Jessie and Holly here at his home and at the Barracks in Christchurch. Her family were here on sabbatical from Texas, USA.

It will be a beautiful little film of Loo-Chi at his home in Phillipstown, Christchurch, New Zealand, with his family; sharing with us his life as a Tai Chi Master and his seafaring days on the high seas.

Geraldine C Parkes
Committee Member

The Festival of Tai Chi 2010

The Festival of Tai Chi 2010 will be held on the 27th November at the Cashmere Club, 50 Colombo Street from 9 am – 3 pm. One Breath"

A relay of special events to celebrate World Tai Chi and Qigong Day (WTCQD) will begin in New Zealand and end 24 hours later in Hawaii.

WTCQD is officially recognized by the United Nations World Health Organization and aims to promote and educate the world to the benefits of practising Tai Chi and Qigong.

Since 2002, at 10.00am local time, Tai Chi and Qigong enthusiasts in New Zealand have had the honour of kick-starting WTCQD for the rest of the world and to initiate a "healing wave of energy" to encircle the globe.

This year WTCQD will be held on Saturday, 25th April and in observance of Anzac Day the usual large public events will take place in the afternoon instead.

However, New Zealand at the prescribed time of 10.00am will still kick-start WTCQD. Individuals and small groups of practitioners will gather to perform Tai Chi and Qigong privately with the hope that the new "healing wave of energy" they initiate for the world in 2009, will also carry the Spirit of Anzac - for peace, freedom, unity, love of life.

In Auckland, the celebration of WTCQD will for the first time take place over two days. On Saturday afternoon the public demonstrations will include mass displays of Tai Chi and Qigong performed by combined clubs and schools. A special seminar is planned for Sunday to teach the Ba Duan Jin Qigong routine. This simple to learn, evidence-based health Qigong from China is currently being promoted world-wide.

Research have shown that the traditional Chinese health technologies of Tai Chi and Qigong can reduce anxiety, depression, and chronic pain conditions. They can boost the immune system, improve respiratory function, burn calories, dramatically improve balance, improve cardiovascular benefit, provide powerful stress management tools, and slow aspects of the aging process.

WTCQD in New Zealand is organized by the New Zealand National Tai Chi Chuan Association Inc.

Further information is available at the websites:
www.worldtaichiday-akl.org
www.worldtaichiday.org

Contacts:

Diana Lau

Ph: 638 5308, 021-182 4963

Email Diana Lau

Orlando Garcia

Ph: 636 1329, 021-560 200

Email Orlando Garcia

David Wong

Ph: 625 5197, 027-475 4162

Email David Wong

WTCQD in Auckland is sponsored by SPORT AUCKLAND and ASIA NEW ZEALAND FOUNDATION

2nd International Taijiquan Invitational Tournament

Dear New Zealand Kung-Fu Wushu Federation Members and Friends.

The ‘Hong Kong Wushu Union Organizing Committee of the upcoming 2nd International Taijiquan Invitational Tournament cum 1st International Taiji Push Hands Championships is seeking participation.

Please advise a.s.a.p. if anyone is interested in attending this event, which is scheduled between 28th February to 1st March, 2009 in Hong Kong. All work contributing to its running is done on a voluntary basis.

The Association was established in 1988 and is based out of Christchurch, New Zealand with a sub branch in Auckland.

It was set up by students of Loo Chi Hu QSM and has established connections with various groups throughout New Zealand since its inception. In 1991 the Association became affiliated with the T’ai Chi Society in Taiwan.

Mr Hu is the patron of the Association but does not recognise himself or the Association as being a regulatory body for the practice of T’ai Chi Ch’uan.

The Association recommends anyone who is interested in having their level of skill appraised to approach the New Zealand Kung-Fu Wu Shu Federation or the Beijing Institute of Physical Education.

The main aim of the Association is to create the sharing of ideas and connections between individual practitioners and groups who are passionate about T’ai Chi.

Ways in which the Association has endeavoured to achieve this is by publishing a quarterly newsletter (comprising of appropriate articles from practitioners and relevant free advertising) and by holding workshops. An annual workshop has been held in Christchurch since 1988. The Association also has educational videos and DVDs available for sale.

More recently the Association has been working with groups involved in the health sector e.g. the Accident Compensation Corporation, New Zealand Presbyterian Support for Falls Prevention, the Osteoporosis Society and Aged Concern as well as maintaining a register of current T’ai Chi instructors throughout New Zealand.

Membership is open to anyone. The annual subscription is $10 which helps cover the cost of all the Association’s activities.

For more information please contact the Association at Retnep@xtra.co.nz or you can write to PO Box 10203, Phillipstown, Christchurch.
